When we started collecting data on propane providers the are three interesting metrics that started to emerge:
- The same company will charge people very different prices. In some cases, it’s because they have a specific agreement, for example leasing a tank, in other cases it just seems random.
- There are a lot more propane providers than most people realize. For example, in my area there are at least 13 companies that will deliver propane to my house. Before launching PropaneSearch.com I had no idea many of these companies even existed. Many are small businesses and get their business through word of mouth. Crowd sourcing this data has been a great way give small business more exposure.
- There is a trade off on price and quality of service. I have found that companies with the lowest prices will often have the most negative reviews. They often do not return phone calls or show up when promised.
With your continued support our hope is to build a network of contributors that are going to bring more transparency pricing to the propane market and provide more exposure to small businesses. If you have not signed up, please consider adding a new supplier or updating a price.
